Modi tells SHGs, fishermen to explore seaweed farming
Quote:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Sunday that fishermen and self-help groups (SHGs) along the coast can opt for seaweed farming that has major pharmaceutical application and nutrient value. It has the potential to transform the way of farming, he said.
If so please sanction a National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) with "Marine Pharmacognosy Department' in Mangalore immediately.

State will get new fisheries policy, says Siddaramaiah

Hope the state fisheries policy will support 'seaweed farming' also. Better call it 'Aquaculture Policy' so to include other 'aquaculture' products including 'mariculture'. Note that aquaculture is the term used for farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other aquatic organisms. (Currently fisheries is just one activity of aquaculture that is harvesting of natural grown fishes.) Let the policy have support for setting up of educational and R&D institutes in this domain including 'Marine Engineering', 'Marine Biotech Park' and 'Marine Biotech Incubation Centres'.

Make this institute specialized for 'Biomedical Engineering' & 'Marine Engineering' (non-maritime marine engineering like Ocean Engineering, Maricultural/Aquacultural Engineering etc as there is separate peoposal for Indian Maritime University). And let us hope for 'Health & Marine Knowledge City" in the coastal Karnataka also.
When will the state government come up with comprehensive 'Marine Policy' which includes 'Maritime Policy', 'Offshore Policy' etc?

'Seaweed farming not a part of fishermen's life'

So, we need a 'Seaweed Cultivation Skill Development Centre' at CMFRI or Fisheries College.

Whether Seaweed biodiversity preservation is a part of German funded National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for coastal Karnataka? Why no meetings are held on this in Mangaluru so far? What we need is to identify all medicinally valuable marine species (even freshwater & terrestrial species) of coastal Karnataka and have plan to preserve this biodiversity. I think Mangalore University has plan to work on this in their proposed Belapu facility. We also need a watch on how MRPL desalination plant will effect marine biodiversity.

Modi advises cultivation of seaweeds as biofertilizer in Coastal Karnataka

Startups are welcome in seaweed as food (food processing), biofertilizer, bioplastic, biopharma, biocosmetic, biofuel areas {1,2,3,4,5,6} and also offshore/deepsea aquacultural & aquacultural allied engineering (includes manufacturing of heavy engineering equipments {1,2,3} for local use and export) & mariculture robotics {1,2}. Of course offshore biorefinery & biofuel power plants are also useful for offshore mariculture. (We also have to develop sea-based power storage techniques). Karnataka coastline is limited compared to other states of India and I think depth is more so we have to use deepsea mariculture techniques. {1,2,3,4}

What we need is a proper 'Aquaculture Policy' support to do all these things.

How about sustainable mangroove cultivation with controlled harvesting for bioplastic, biopharma, ecotourism (boating/kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, bird watching etc), coastal defense and natural resilience against climate change? Say in & around Netravati islands & banks? {1,2} (Let us scratch our head later on how to drive highspeed boats through mangrove forests).

Whether NITK is considered for Smart Campus Cloud Network-SCCN project? {1,2,3,4,5}. I think even MITE with SIEMENS Centre of Excellence can go for smart campus. Even Bearys Institute of Technology backed by an organization who has vast experience in green buildings should go for it.
Whether NITK & MIT (Manipal) will be part of SCCN?
