Yeah its happening. For example, the largest nyc hotel outside of Manhattan is slated for LIC. Named Toyoko Inn. Will have 1,200+ hotel units. There's a lot of mini hotels in the range of 100-200 units rising on smaller parcels.
The Tokoyo Inn is slated to rise on Jackson Avenue. There's about 4000-5000 units (hotel) in the pipeline for LIC. 10,000-12,000 residential units of all functionality to come online by 2019 to 2021 pending pipeline projects starting this year (2018).
