Saturday August 11 2007 14:40 IST
T'URAM: Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology is in the process of developing a new heart valve. This innovative valve will be MRI compatible and the clinical trials of this valve will begin next month.

This was disclosed by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology director Dr K. Mohandas while delivering the keynote address at the Inter-Media Publicity Co-ordination Committee meeting here on Friday. He said Vision 2020・envisages meeting 50 percent of the requirements of the Indian medical devices industry through indigenous production. For this, the biomedical technology wing of the institute would be adequately strengthened. Since its inception, the institute has filed 107 patents of which 62 technologies have already been developed and 21 technology transfers have been effected. For diseases causing movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, deep brain stimulation technique has proved to be very effective and the Sree Chitra Institute was one of the few institutions in the country providing this treatment, Dr K. Mohandas said.
