Railway proposal for capacity augmentation gets nod

Even as the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., celebrated its 27th founding day, the Ministry of Railways has accorded in-principle approval for its capacity augmentation at an approximate cost of Rs. 4,980 crore. The official programme was held at the KRCL headquarters in Belapur, Navi Mumbai, on Sunday.

Work on construction of 10 new railway stations — including Mirjan between Gokarna and Kumta, and Innanje between Udupi and Padubidri in Karnataka — is in progress.

With electrification of the entire KRCL route network approved, the total cost of capacity doubling and electrification is expected to be around Rs. 7,500 crore. It is expected to be completed in five years.

As things stand now, the nearest motorable road to MIA from this station is around 6-kms passing through Karambaru, Porkodi and Jokatte. But if a road were to be constructed abutting the railway track from Maravoor rail over bridge, the distance will come down to 2kms. The railway has already completed the land acquisition for the proposed road. Members of Malavoor gram panchayat have already represented this matter to MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.
