(Taiwan News)—There will be a frenzy of trying to catch a glimpse of the breathtaking sunset that can be compared with Manhattanhenge on a street of Taiwan’s southern port city of Kaohsiung today (Nov. 12) despite a discouraging weather forecast.
Manhattanhenge refers to the setting sun that aligns with Manhattan’s city grid, creating a solar display perfectly framed by concrete buildings and steel skyscrapers. And there are two days in a year that people in Kaohsiung have a good chance of viewing a sunset similar to Manhattanhenge, and one of the two days is today.
After media reporting and photography enthusiasts’ spreading the word in recent years, the two occasions of viewing the sunset from the city’s Cingnian Road (青年路) have become incredibly photogenic events.
To accommodate the crowds, Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau will partly enforce traffic control on the fast lane of Cingnian Road between Minquan Road (民權路) and Guanghua Road (光華路) between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
In spite of overcast and rainy weather was forecast for Kaohsiung today, the city’s tourism bureau said related activities scheduled to be held on the spot will not be canceled regardless of the weather. However, the bureau kept its fingers crossed for clear skies and a glowing sunset over the city.
As Kaohsiung Cultural Center is located on higher ground with a good view of the spectacular sunset on Cingnian Road, security guards at the center have been bracing for an assembly of photographers there.
