They could have used the building next door on 5th but extend its facade to blend it with the corner building.

I saw the building after they had taken the old facade off. It's not brick underneath - it's wood construction. "alamo"-like top part was not there - just a big old-looking gable truss. The new decorative top has been built on top of this structure to mimic the original building.
