VIDEO: Mount Pleasant Substation in Vancouver, British Columbia

BC Hydro is building a substation to LEED standards in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia. The substation is part of the Vancouver City Centre Transmission Project.

Given increasing demand for electricity, the project will connect existing substations to the Mount Pleasant Substation as well as drilling underneath False Creek.

Marcel Reghelini, the director of transmission projects and programs for BC Hydro, spoke with the Journal of Commerce about building the substation not only to LEED standards but also as the most seismically stable structure of its type in North America.

Reghelini also detailed the challenges of working on a project of significant size in a residential neighbourhood, where heavy equipment must co-exist with a dense population and nearby heritage homes.
