I don't think it's particularly dangerous at night, no more so than other big UK cities anyway. Certainly all of the city centre, Oxford Road University corridor etc where all the nightlife is located is fine, I've spent many a night wandering around different districts with no problems though you will find the occasional dodgy character.

If you go further out from the Northern quarter away from the city centre into the 'still to be regenerated' areas you will find some not too pleasant places but there is nothing there anyway except low income housing and warehouses.
