It's proximity to Asian markets is probably offset by it's incredible distance from the rest of the Russian economy. I would imagine it's much more efficient to ship something from Singapore through the Suez and up the Black Sea than it is to send it to Vladivostok and train it 6000 km to Moscow. Unless the source of some major Russian export is located closer to the East Coast than it is to the core population centers, the city probably remains relatively obscure in the Russian economy.

Edit: A quick Wikipedia search says fishing makes up the vast majority of the city's economy, which makes sense. Although apparently it is a major importer of Japanese cars. Cars are one thing probably easier to ship by train than by boat given the high weight but odd shape.
