nyc -- developments around queens plaza, lic

let’s take a hike around scruffy, but rapidly redeveloping northern long island city. it’s quite a mix of a beautiful old bridge, old elevated metal transit, warehouses, taxi businesses, neighborhoody stuff and now new office buildings, cheap new hotels, new apt buildings, the east side access mega transit project and even some of that moneyed, artsy hipster stuff. it’s also chock full of striking visual juxapositions, even for ny. have a look…

actor christopher walken tells his silvercup story:
“In my younger days, I lived near Silvercup Bakery, and I can still recall sitting on my fire escape, inhaling the intoxicating aroma of bread baking. Of course, at that time, I could never have guessed that I’d one day be inside the Silvercup building—not sampling a loaf of bread, mind you, but as a zombie.”
