Delegates to the Union of BC Municipalities voted to ban sponsorship by foreign governments of convention events, in response to China's sponsorship of one of the receptions:

...Elected officials don’t want to see foreign government sponsorship at the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, although they are in favour of sponsorship from corporations and unions.

The union, which struck a panel this summer to review sponsorship and financing of the conference, surveyed delegates who gathered at the convention in Vancouver on Wednesday.

The review was prompted by concern from some municipal politicians about a reception sponsored by the consulate general of China. The Chinese consulate, which hosts its reception on Wednesday evening, pays about $6,000 to be a sponsor.
