Copps is already pretty much already obselete from an NHL standpoint, so its continued aging does not make all that much difference.

A simple argument can be made that the Leafs would sooner allow a Hamilton team than a more nearby team, though both possibilities seem pretty far away at the moment.

It is possible to try to get the big things while chipping away at the little ones. The NHL may well be a pipe dream, but I don't imagine that keeping the dream going costs too much in terms of man-hours.
