A new hotel is coming to downtown Springfield and city officials say it's reflective of the growth and demand in the area.
Bryan Hotels Management is bringing the new hotel - Tru by Hilton, to a 2.2-acre lot at the corner of Elm Street and Kimbrough.
Bryan Hotels already owns several student properties in town, but this is the first hotel in Springfield. They say they chose downtown to be a part of the momentum in that area.
"Demand is increasing in Springfield," said Brad Gebhard, the chief operations officer for Bryan Hotels. "There's a lot of lodging opportunities north and south; we feel like the downtown area is a little bit underdeveloped."
With the tenants moving out of the six houses on that block last month, the houses will be demolished in the coming weeks and construction of the new hotel will begin. Gebhard expects to break ground in August.
The building will be four stories tall with 98 units.
"It will have a real contemporary feel," he said. "It is really big in technology."
