The official said the highway projects approved also include economic corridor developments aimed at the faster movement of cargo.

The government had earlier planned to develop economic corridors with a length of about 21,000 kilometres besides 14,000 kilometres of feeder routes. The corridors included Mumbai-Cochin-Kanyakumari, Bengaluru-Mangaluru, Hyderabad-Panaji and Sambalpur-Ranchi, to name a few.
Does that mean both NH-66 & NH-75 are economic corridors?

I doubt this. I think Mangaluru-Shivamogga-Davanagere-Ballari-Raichur road will be upgraded as a proper fourlane road excluding westernghat stretch.

Work Plan is needed for exploring Industrial Opportunities

Good that meeting on IT opportunities was held in gulf countries. There are a lot of ICT related stuffs Mangalore can do in Gulf Countries as I posted earlier. What we need is an expert team in Building Automation & Home Informatics. Mangalore can come up with its own ICT network conecting all engineering colleges including AIMIT similar to SCCN or NAIN to build educational infrastructure to create man power to serve Gulf countries in Home Automation sector. (check the end of post #352 below) Let me also add this to the next post on Analytics (Artificial Intelligence) educational infrastructure requirements. I don't know why the central or the state government didn't think of ICT network for startup coast engineering colleges or at least include a college in SCCN! Though Incubation Centre in Mangalore can be used there is nothing like learning at college campus by automating entire campus.

Develop phase 2 of Bykampady Industrial Area: KCCI
Quote:
KCCI President Vathika Pai said that the chamber will urge the State government to develop phase 2 of Bykampady Industrial Area in the Jesco land.

Briefing reporters here on Wednesday, she said that making smaller plots of the two acre and one acre would help in supporting the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region.

There is a huge demand for industrial lands at Bykampady because of the proximity to the port and NH 66. There is a lot of demand for smaller plots from SMEs who are paying exorbitant rent, rendering their units unviable. A single window clearance facility to support entrepreneurs would help the upcoming SMEs in the region, she said.

About 348 acre land is available in Bykampady. If the KIADB distributes at least half of the land, then it would benefit the SMEs in the region, she felt.

She said that Bykampady Township Authority proposal is ready and would be submitted to the state government shortly.

Vathika said that KCCI will continue to represent to the authorities concerned to shift the CRZ headquarters to Mangaluru instead of Bengaluru. "Its presence in this coastal area is what is required and not in a city which has no coastline at all," she said.
Even MRPL, MCF, KIOCL headquarters should be shifted to Mangaluru.

Apparel Park proposal should be revived, 2

If apparel industry has to be developed to replace beedi industries then a model similar to the existing beedi industries has to be planned. That is, tailors taking raw material (i.e., cloths, threads, buttons etc) from agents and then submitting finished products. Other model of interest is disappearing handloom homeindustries model (handloom office, मग्ग कछेरि) where thread is supplied by agents and finished product is submitted back by weavers. Otherwise working women should have facilities to look after their small kids in the park itself.

The State government is prepared to provide 96 acres of Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board land at Ganjimutt, off Mangaluru, for the park.

The process of setting up Karnataka’s first ‘plastic park’ in Mangaluru has gained momentum with the State government identifying 96 acres of land for phase 1 of the project and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) ready to supply the raw material.

The government is prepared to provide 96 acres of Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) land at Ganjimutt, off Mangaluru, for the park, and 32 entrepreneurs have shown interest in opening units there, said Gokuldas Nayak, Joint Director of the Industries and Commerce Department.

The sole petroleum refinery in the State, MRPL, has abundant raw material (polypropylene), up to 440,000 tonnes, to set in production, said MRPL managing director H. Kumar.

The department is trying make the park a cluster so as to get a grant (of about Rs. 40 crore) from the Union government to create infrastructure, including a common effluent plant, common testing facility, roads and drainage. The common infrastructure will enable entrepreneurs to cut down their costs, Mr. Nayak said.

Training and testing

The proposed park, which could provide employment for over 30,000 people, is also to get a unit of the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology to train youngsters and test products coming out of the units in the park, says Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Anantkumar Hegde.

The three primary stakeholders — the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the State government, and the anchor tenant (MRPL) — are already in the picture and the process of forming a special purpose vehicle or another entity to establish the park is in motion. MRPL is striving to create the required ecosystem for the park by involving the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and other bodies, Mr. Kumar said.
Plastindia 2018 to benefit plastic industry, organisers
Quote:
With the 10th International Plastics Exhibition, Conference and Convention — Plastindia 2018 — scheduled to be organised in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, from February 7 to 12, 2018, Plastindia Foundation has stated that a large participation of entrepreneurs from Mangaluru will promote substantial growth of the sector in the Karnataka coast.
Quote:
With a plastic park and Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology in the pipeline for Mangaluru, there is wide scope for the further growth of the industry in the region, he said.
There are also a couple of bioplastic manufactures in Gandhinagar/Ahmedabad. But what Mangaluru needs is seaweed based bioplastic/biotextile products manufacturing ability, which is still in research phase - Seaweeds can be a new source for bioplastics. Coastal Gujarat & Tamilnadu have seaweed farmers. Central salt and marine and chemical research institute (CSMCRI), Bhavnagar, Gujarat has developed many seaweed technologies like cultivation, biofertilizer (bio-stimulants), biodegradable films, non-animal gelatin capsules etc. (I was thinking so far CMFRI/NIOT are main Indian research institutes on seaweed). Having CSMCRI along with CIPET in Mangaluru will give a boost to seaweed based industries in Canara, Konkan & Malabar region. We also need to know how to use effluents of desalination plants.

MCF conducts public hearing for project expansion
MCF to invest Rs. 1,500 cr. to double double production of fertilizers
Quote:
The Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers (MCF), a subsidiary of Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd., is on an expansion mode to nearly double its production in about two years.

MCF, which produces about a million ton of fertilizers a year, has plans to add another 7.5 lakh tonnes during its expansion programme, said Director Prabhakar Rao. The proposal is in line with the Union Government’s make-in India policy to reduce imports. Now the country is importing about 10 million tonnes of fertilizers every year.

Speaking at a mandatory public hearing programme organised by the company in the presence of Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil here, Mr. Rao said another 1.5 lakh tonnes of urea production would be added to the existing 4 lakh tonne production while production of DAP/NPK would get increased from the present 4 lakh tonnes to one million tonnes in the next two-five years.

The company would be investing close to Rs. 1,500 crore for the expansion programme, which also includes setting up a poly-carboxylate ether unit to produce super plastisizer that is mixed with concrete to strengthen the mix.

The company does not require any additional land and the new units would come up within the 192 acres of its premises at Panambur. Nor would it require additional water than 9 million litres per day supplied by Mangaluru City Corporation as MCF has become a zero-effluent discharge entity. All the water is utilised within the premises, Mr. Rao said.

The expansion would provide direct employment to about 400 people in additional to the existing 1,200 and indirect employment to over 3,000 people in terms of packing bags production, transportation etc.

Amenity building of Campco to be inaugurated on Jan 21

Union Budget 2018-19: ASSOCHAM seeks 10% customs duty on pulp imports

Alas, nobody is teaching Tuluvas how to produce pulp & paper from seaweeds. What we should plan for is a 'pulp & paper, printing, packing & labeling industrial cluster' mostly near a riverway for easy transportation of seaweeds and outputs. We need to use rivers for agriculture, industries which needs waterways and also probably for BRTS. Only red area of Mangaluru-Udupi belt shown in my old post in this forum is to be used for urbanization and industrialization except for SAZ. As these ideas develop we can consolidate them as a post on 'Mangaluru-Udupi seaerotropolis' or 'Alupa seaerotropolis' later. The government has changed name of 'Mangaluru CEZ' to 'Canara CEZ' but I will identify it as 'Alupa CEZ' after Alupa kings who ruled this region for more than 1000 years as Canara is a name given by portugese colonizers (we have already renamed South Canara & North Canara successfully but this government trying to bring it back) and also as many things named after Canara have ditched the region already. But before the 'Alupa seaerotropolis' the government should be ready with property laws for sea! By the way hope that proposed Skills University will be established in Uttara Kannada and focus on developing skills on mariculture including seaweed cultivation and other marine stuffs also.

We have to also explore whether Seaweed Fabrics microeconomy can be built to replace beedi industries by allocating seaweed garment & apparel manufacturing tasks to home workshops or village workshops through handloom societies or a similar cooperative society.
