actually i would not have been opposed to one at the wtc site, just better or even plainer than the o.g. childs design. i'm not big on the shard/kingdom tower style either, at least for nyc. something more classic and...real...meaning occupied all the way up to the spire, for an nyc super duper tall.
Actually, what might look good is building a couple 2k footers on one of the boroughs that are across the river (in between downtown and midtown). That could possibly add to the skyline from many angles, while not looking completely out of place.

It would look like a small super tall skyline overlooking a massive semi tall and dense skyline. It would be close enough to be almost a part of it, but far enough as to not look so out of place.
