If you go further out from the Northern quarter away from the city centre into the 'still to be regenerated' areas you will find some not too pleasant places but there is nothing there anyway except low income housing and warehouses.

It was quite okay to go out at night, but just got a feeling it was not very safe because of some shady persons, and from what I read about Piccadilly Gardens (that it should be avoided after dark). But I'm sure Manchester is safer then many other cities in Britain and Sweden for example.
