The convention centre first started operating at Canada Place in 1986, I don't know what would have been used in the city for similar events before that, maybe Hastings Park buildings, the (then new) BC Place, and other smaller venues?

, and it was built on top as a reconstruction. There used to be CPR steamships docking there until 1955(?)

Also, Ballantyne Pier , was around way back then also.

I can't seem to find when the first actual 'cruise ship' visited Vancouver, but passenger ships of one type or another have been running out of the port since the 1800s.
