SYDNEY — Tom Cochrane’s smash hit Life is a Highway is sure to go over big with the crowd expected to take in his performance this summer.

One of the biggest names in Canadian music, Cochrane is an exciting addition to the Cape Breton BikeFest schedule, which is expected to draw thousands of motorcyclists to the island, July 31-Aug. 3.

Smooth Herman’s Promotions, in association with Cape Breton BikeFest and 101.9 The Giant, have announced that Cochrane and rock band Red Rider will headline an outdoor concert at the Sydney Marine Terminal Aug. 1, as part of the Budweiser Concert Series.

Cochrane has been recording since 1973, and Red Rider joined him in 1986. In 1991 he released his chart-topping solo effort, Mad Mad World which became one of the biggest-selling Canadian records of all time.

“We want the people who come to Cape Breton for BikeFest, and the people of Cape Breton themselves, to have a great night — and that meant bringing in someone who was going to get people out, be part of the crowd, and feel the energy that’s running through all of our events,” said Scott Boyd, chair of the Cape Breton BikeFest Society.

Boyd noted plans for the four-day BikeFest are going very well and several event announcements will be made in the coming weeks.

“We’ve spent months meeting community partners all over the Island,” he said. “And when they hear what we’re doing, and take a look at the events we’ve attracted from Inverness to Glace Bay, they come up with their own way to contribute to the festival and make this a memorable experience for everyone.”

Cape Breton BikeFest 2009 is supported by Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture, Destination Cape Breton, Joe’s Warehouse, Smooth Herman’s, 101.9 The Giant, 103.5 The Eagle, Casino Nova Scotia, the Cape Breton Post, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, and Centre 200.

Tickets for Cochrane’s concert are on sale now at Joe’s Warehouse Restaurant and online at www.smoothhermans.ca.
