What's the football "geography" of Brazil?
this is a question that involves lots of different things.

1 - the biggest clubs are in the major cities, specially south and southeast cities (São Paulo, Rio, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre), but also from Salvador (Bahia) and Recife (Pernambuco), in the northeast. But northeast clubs swing more between divisions (they get relegated more often). But there are football clubs all over the country.

2 - players come from all over the country, including quaint towns. Some come from poor small towns in the northeast. Others come from the capitals all over the country, others from rural farming towns in the west, others from small high quality towns like these ones.

Some examples:

Dunga (Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri), the actual brazilian NT coach and captain of the team who won the 1994 World Cup, is from the city of IJUÍ, with 79k people.

Alexandre Pato (Alexandre Rodrigues da Silva), Milan striker, was born in the small PATO BRANCO, in Paraná state, with 70k people

Taffarel (Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel), the goalkeeper of the national team in 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups, was born in Santa Rosa, 66k people.

some others
Falcão (Paulo Roberto Falcão), a great player from the 1982 brazilian team was born in Abelardo Luz, a town of 16k people in Santa Catarina state

Lucas Pezzini Leiva, who plays for the NT and for Liverpool, was born in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul state, 200k

Pelé, the best player ever, was born in Três Corações (Three Hearts), in Minas Gerais state, with 80k
