NIT-K, NMAMIT to get innovation hub tag
Quote:
Mangaluru: After the launch of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Opportunities and Learning (CEOL) in Mangaluru, the NITI Aayog will soon give the innovation hub tag to the premier technical institutions NIT-K, Surathkal and NMAMIT, Karkala.
This was announced during defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman's recent visit to the city to inaugurate CEOL. Apart from this, these oldest technical institutions in the coastal districts have been chosen as India's first start-up districts with incubators by the ministry of commerce and industry.

"NMAMIT, Karkala, and NIT-K, Surathkal, will jointly execute a couple of projects under this programme, while they will also execute some independent ones. Senior professors from the country's premier technical institutions will lend their support for proper execution of the projects," Karanam Uma Maheshwar Rao, director, NIT-K, Surathkal, told TOI.

The first project that NIT-K will be working on, is to make methanol as an alternative fuel, and in related areas. The ground work for it was prepared during the recently-held national conference on internal combustion engines and combustion, at the campus. It was attended by V K Saraswat, member of NITI Aayog and former chief of DRDO, and Sanjiv Singh, chairman, Indian Oil Corporation.

Speaking on having additional infrastructure for innovation and start-ups, Rao added that the recent announcement of a Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA), has additional benefits for the institute to utilize the opportunity to the maximum, where finance is not a roadblock. "We are focusing on infrastructure, wherein it houses modernized equipment, aiding in research and innovation," Rao pointed out.

Apart from an innovation hub, NMAMIT and NIT-K, Surathkal, have also been chosen as India's first start-up districts with incubators, by the ministry of commerce and industry. Connectivity (air, road, sea and rail), presence of several education institutions, state-of-art facilities, student resources and infrastructure, were key factors to get these institutions selected for the centre.

Niranjan N Chiplunkar, principal, NMAIT, said as per directions, the institution has done construction activities on a 10,000 square foot area, for the incubation centre. "We have already completed works of the administration area, which is about 2,000 square feet, and are awaiting further communication from the government in this regard," he said.

Mangaluru, 08 Jan 2018: A contract agreement was signed between the President of India, acting through and represented by the director, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a constituent laboratory of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Nitte (Deemed to be University) at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Deralakatte, here, on January 3, 2018 at 12.00pm and Networking with Biodosimetry laboratory of INMAS, DRDO, New Delhi, for the establishing Biodosimetry laboratory at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Deralakatte, Mangaluru and Networking with Biodosimetry laboratory of INMAS, DRDO, New Delhi.

INMAS is a premier laboratory of the DRDO engaged in the research of basic and applied medical sciences including radioprotectors and treatment modalities for the management of radiation emergencies, endocrinology, biodosimetry, drug development and strategies for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) defence, Radiation counter measures, besides combat causality care. Biodosimetry Lab shall help in monitoring radiation exposure status of medical professionals, hospital staff at K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte (Deemed to be University) Mangaluru and other hospitals of Karnataka state. Nineteen countries have established Biodosimetry laboratories during 2012-2014 and successfully networked. In India, there are only three laboratories including INMAS, and ours will be the fourth and the first in the state of Karnataka.

Biodosimetry lab is being established for assisting medical management of Radiation exposure. Such exposure can occur during radiation accidents and among medical professionals.

Since a single lab can only handle limited samples and in emergency the sample size will be very large. Therefore more Biodosimetry labs are needed to be established and work in network for Biodosimetry service.

Once established this lab can serve as radiation diagnostic lab for radiation over exposure among medical professional and participate in building national and international capacity of Biodosimetry service for handling medical radiation energy. This diagnostic information will also help in prediction of short term and long term health consequences of radiation exposure.

What happened to 'School of Finance & Analytics'? Whether ex-miniters's son is contesting for 2019 Loksabha seat or not? I think the district body of the party should request him for this so that he will work for bringing 'School of Finance & Analytics' to the district with full enthusiasm.

Incubation network

Gaurav Gupta said that the government has been widening the incubation network, spreading across the entire state. The incubation centres meant for start-ups will promote the students in providing solution to the problems such as traffic, wastewater management, sanitation, plant diseases and health care. These centres will have a tie-up with institutions like NITK. There are 7,000 start-ups at present and 20,000 start-ups are planned (in the state?) for the next five years.

Gaurav Gupta inaugurated the New Age Incubation Network NAIN at the Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management on the occasion. The centre will focus on projects such as awareness programmes on cleanliness, cost effective precast toilet for rural Karnataka, computer-aided diagnosis for early detection of breast cancer, freshness analysis of sea fish, hydrophonic agriculture system and so on. Pre - ideation workshops, mentoring, incubation and start-up programmes will be conducted in this regard. Faculty from the department concerned and an industry expert will provide guidance to students. Karnataka Government provides support up to three years in the initial stage.

‘Industries should form mutual aid groups to exchange knowledge, face disasters’
Quote:
It is better that groups of similar industries in Mangaluru region form mutual aid groups along the lines of other States to exchange knowledge and assistance during disasters, A.R. Vijayendra, Additional Director, Department of Factories and Boilers, said.
Quote:
M. Venkatesh, Director (Refinery), MRPL, suggested the setting up of a Safety Chair at NITK that could assist the government and industries on framing policies and coming out with new techniques in safety management.
Quote:
More than 50% of hazardous chemicals used by industries across the State are present in Dakshina Kannada alone, said M.B. Sudatta, Dean (Academics), NITK. As such, adequate and proper safety culture has to be created, he said adding that NITK would always play a vital role in this regard. Conference chairman G. Sriniketan said risk and safety management should be introduced as a subject or at least certain concept of safety has to be brought in school curriculum.
Not only safety chair for chemical hazards ('Hazardous Materials Analytics') but Mangaluru needs 'Indian Institute of Hazard & Disaster Management & Informatics' (IIHDMI) to address all types of hazards including environmental & climate change hazards, water hazards, earthquake hazards, disease/biological hazards, mechanical hazards, radiational hazards (Kaiga), maritime hazards, occupational hazards, ergonomic hazards etc. Related to health we have Biodosimetry Lab & then there is CHD Group working on public health centric policy. We need to strengthen them by having an institute capable of doing methodological hazard & disaster studies with computational modeling/simulation capabilities on disease/biological hazards & disaster management. We can club this model with Microclimate Model of the city for proper urban/rural planning addressing various hazard & disaster management aspects. Finally 'Alupa Enterprise' should be a unified model of everything. (I renamed 'Tulunadu Enterprise' as 'Alupa Enterprise' to expand its territory).

I think recent visit of HRD minister was a total failure and did not bring any R&D and training institute to Mangalore. We require a NOTA campaign for IIPE, IIHDMI & IMU/NIOT/CSMCRI.
