Ode to mid-century kitsch sells for $600K in Midtown

By Louis Aguilar | The Detroit News

A former motel and tribute to mid-century kitsch design has been sold to the Midtown Detroit Inc., the nonprofit development group that plans to revive the empty building.

The former University Motel, 5841 Second Ave., on the northern edge of Wayne State University is tattered and trash-strewn, yet retains some of its vintage charm.

The sale of the city-owned motel and an adjacent two-story building at 5847 Second was approved Tuesday by the Detroit City Council for $600,000. Plans include a hotel, “micro-residences” and retail, according to a City Council document. The sale was approved without comment from the council.
Cobo's green roof is going to get an observation area like the Ford Rouge Plant, it seems.

Observation area planned for Cobo Center’s green roof

Associated Press

November 15, 2017

Detroit – An observation area is planned to allow visitors to Cobo Center in downtown Detroit to view the facility’s living green roof.

Cobo Center officials say installation of the observation area is scheduled sometime next year.

The 10,000-square-foot (929-square-meter) green roof was installed as part of a $279 million renovation of the convention center. It creates a natural habitat for birds and insects. The roof also provides insulation to cool and heat the building.

A dozen varieties of flowering plants grow over a waterproofing membrane with layers of root barrier and natural drainage. Runoff rainwater is reused and distributed through the irrigation system to water the roof.
