Buzz up! On Sunday, Sept. 21 from 2-6 p.m., the streets of Fall Creek will be filled with acoustic music as many of Ithaca's finest musicians sing and play on their porches and front stoops.
To hear them, grab a map at one of three pickup locations (Greenstar, Guitar Works, and Gimme Coffee on Cayuga Street) or online at
www.porchfest.org, and then walk or bike around the Fall Creek neighborhood to take in the sounds of this free event.
Like last year, Porchfest features a wide range of musical styles. Performers will include bands Jennie Lowe Stearns & the Fire Choir, Nate & Kate, Hubcap, Sim Redmond Band, Teachers Lounge, and the Yardvarks; electronic music legend Mother Mallard; and musicians Dave Davies, Vikki Armstrong, Rick Manning, the Aceto brothers, Kevin Kinsella, Hank Roberts, Juge Greenspun, and Jan Nigro.
The festival offers musical styles ranging from roots rock to Dixieland jazz, and from operetta to acoustic heavy metal! There are also chances to join in: Irish band Traonach will host an open Irish music session, and Emoretta Yang is professor for the required course “Ukulelese as a Second Language,” your chance to learn to play the uke. Still another highlight is long-lost Burns sister Terry performing with her husband Ron Kristy, recent transplants to the Fall Creek neighborhood.
When the music is done at 6 p.m., grab a picnic dinner and your instruments and head to the Auburn Street “triangle” park for more fun and music, led by the incomparable Johnny Russo. If you have questions or want to get involved, contact festival organizers Gretchen Hildreth and Lesley Greene at
