Two more great industrial buildings from Winston-Salem.
Salem Cotton Manufacturing Co.,
was built in 1836. I seem to remember reading this was the first manufacturing building in the south with electric lights. It was converted to a hotel in the early 1980s. If you visit, this part of the city is filled with homes, churches, and buildings from the 1700s and 1800s and this hotel is for those visitors. The design of Winston-Salem's award winning ballpark was actually based on this building. The top floor also has a graffiti wall from the 1830s/40s, from the young girls who worked in the building. The Graffiti Wall is covered with glass and visitors can go there and see it.
1980s photographs from UNC Library Collection.
Arista Mills
was built in 1880. It was converted at the same time to a hotel annex for the building above and the Victorian tower is home to the Visit Winston-Salem Visitor's Center. I love the Victorian design of this building.
