King Street/ Highway 8 has as much to do with the current plight of Gore Park as the buses did. It's the same road that was there when Gore Park was in its heydey from the 1950's right throughout the 80's.

There needs to be a reason to draw people to the area, to make it a destination once again. The decline in retail and entertainment business is directly related to the decline in commercial activity. The Spec pulled out of the core for its Frid Street office, Stelco office staff we relocated to the plant site, and the banks moved their offices to cheaper suburban commercial campuses. The recessions in 82 and 90 further decimated private commercial businesses in the core. At the same time, suburban lifestyle was highly desirable at that time, and the urban lifestyle fell out of favour.
