@Alchemist Redux: I would assume it's not because Berlin isn't an important city, because it is probably Germany's most important city, but rather because Frankfurt takes the cake for Germany's airport. If you are from Chicago and traveling to Berlin, you go to Frankfurt (or perhaps Amsterdam) and connect flights or take the ICE or other rail transport.
Berlin is the political center of Germany, but it trails Frankfurt, Munich, the Rhine-Ruhr Area and Hamburg as a center of business and commerce. Also, Berlin has a peripheral location within Germany. Being located within the most sparsely populated part of Germany, its domestic market simply isn't that big.
