Some breaking news.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder made an unannounced trip to downtown Windsor this morning, meeting with high-level Canadian officials intent on getting a new bridge built between the two countries, sources report.

“History in the making,” one source told The Star today of the meeting within the CIBC building, where Transport Canada has an office. Sources reported that in addition to Snyder, U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson as well as Canada’s Minister of Transportation Denis Lebel were present.

Another source said the meeting was intended to be confidential.

Snyder is committed to get the bridge built, and Canadian and Ontario officials are on board, but approval has been delayed in the Michigan legislature. There have been suggestions Snyder may attempt some sort of end-run around the legislature to get the bridge built.

Outside the CIBC building, at Ouellette Avenue and Riverside Drive, was a large black SUV with Michigan plates.

When asked to comment on the high-level meeting in his city, Mayor Eddie Francis replied: “No comment.”
