Similar to the Australian situation, choosing the capital was a politically sensitive issue. Rather than creating a new capital (e.g. Canberra) they choose a town equidistant from both Toronto and Montreal. Ottawa was neither too English, nor too French, nor too close to the border with the Yanks. Perfect.
