We have 2 different systems, BART and Muni Metro, of course. On the central spine of Market Street, where they are both underground, the 2 systems operate above and below each other, BART deeper than Muni.

BART's cars are very old--from the 1970s--and being completely replaced within the next couple of years: https://www.bart.gov/about/projects/cars .

Muni Metro's rolling stock are modern streetcars that operate in 3 modes: As streetcars, in dedicated rights of way on the surface and underground.
