Taipei, May 2 (CNA) A reactor at the No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant in New Taipei tripped out on Friday, after a power transmission pylon on a nearby hilltop toppled during torrential rain, Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) said.

The second nuclear reactor at the power plant automatically shut down as its safety mechanism was activated, the state-run company said, adding that neither the reactor nor the generator was damaged.

The reactor was running at 75 percent capacity when the incident occurred and had been scheduled to remain at that level until June 10 or 11, when the fuel is due to run out, Taipower said.

At that time, the reactor would be shut down for annual maintenance, the company said.

With the reactor now down, only one of six reactors at Taiwan's three functional nuclear power plants is in operation, according to Taipower.

Since early Friday, hundreds of millimeters of rain has fallen in New Taipei and Keelung as a weather front and southwesterly airstream moved over Taiwan from the north, according to the Central Weather Bureau.
