Well, if your talking purely outdoor landscapes, I would say it's definitely a great alternative to Vegas or Texas. The people are very friendly also, but people tend to be quite friendly in Texas and Vegas too. Having lived in California for a good part of my life, I would say that the scenery/outdoor life in California in general and metro L.A. specifically is quite outstanding. Being the entertainment industry nerd that I am, I tend to run the gamut of your typical right brained artist. Meaning that you're never satisfied to be in any one place for too long. We tend to want to rotate our habitat. If I had a choice, and had to place a limit to only a few areas, I personally would choose Southern California, Park City Utah, and outdoor Utah in general for it's other worldly scenery. Plus (might as well while I'm at it) a healthy dose (one to two months a year) in New York, France and Italy.
