Council Addresses Temporary Foreign Workers Ban

VOCM News
May 21, 2014

Quote:
St. John's city council has voted in favour of a motion to write letters to provincial and federal levels of government in favour of temporary foreign workers. At last night's city council meeting, councillor Tom Hann made a plea on behalf of workers who will have to leave the country when their work permits expire.

Hann says people have come here to build a life for themselves, and now they are under stress because of a federal moratorium on employing temporary foreign workers. He says there is a community of immigrants who contribute to the province and the economy, and some of their work permits will expire soon.

Like it or hate it, there is a need for temporary foreign workers if we want our economy (and province) to grow. Although some workers come and go there are others that choose to stay and build a life here. If we continue to solely rely on natural birth rates here we're in for a world of trouble. NL has the oldest population in Canada. I realize this issue is multidimensional in scope and complexity, but the need is there.
