Dallas Arboretum a 'world class' attraction
Sunday, October 17, 2010

...Mary Brinegar, president and CEO of the arboretum, pointed out that in past years, MSN.com named the arboretum one of 10 things you must see in America in the spring. This year, the site named it one of the 14 best gardens in the world for spring flowers.

The arboretum's education programs led all the other large botanic gardens in the nation in a poll by the Directors of Large Gardens.

...Another educational program, the Texas Pioneer Adventure, won the Program Excellence Award, the highest award given to a botanic garden by the American Public Garden Association.

...Growth since 2000 .... Arboretum attendance has risen from 302,362 to 560,000 people a year.

...The Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden: Opening in mid-November 2012, this 7-acre science adventure garden will be the only one like it in the world. It will have 15 learning areas, most of them outside, 150 interactive exhibits, and the latest in technology. Capital campaign chairman Cecile Bonte led the drive that has raised close to $50 million for the project.

Many improvements
The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens has made countless improvements and additions through the years, thanks to its generous supporters.

Oddly enough, however, a lack of space is what occupies Brinegar's thoughts these days.

"I wake up at night thinking about parking," [Mary Brinegar] said. "So many major donors want their names on something of visual beauty, and a parking garage is not that kind of feature. Yet it is our greatest need. ... Parking facilities cost many millions of dollars. We have this on our plate to solve in the future, and it will be our next greatest hurdle."
Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden should break ground this fall/winter:
