As far as location it could be worse. Only 1.3 billion people will ever have the opportunity to see the Royal Clock Tower in person. You can only get within 31 miles of Mecca if you are not a Muslim before you reach the "Muslim/Koran history test" checkpoints. Medina has a similar rule but I don't know what the distance is before the checkpoints.
