The vacant Hardings at the bottom of Westnedge hill has been a big blank façade fronted by an empty parking lot since the grocery store closed several years ago. Now it looks like it is getting new life. I wish that this whole property could be developed more wholeheartedly, with new construction at a greater density, rather than just a renovation of an existing strip mall, but it's still good news for the neighborhood.

The old Hardings Market building in Kalamazoo is getting a facelift years in the making. The Shoppes on Westnedge is moving into the empty building on Howard Street, just south of downtown.

The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority approved a $9.4 million project Thursday morning...Planners expect the new shops to open up in the next two years. The City of Kalamazoo, and developers also plan to use the additional parking lot space for a farmers market and food trucks...The project is expected to create more than a hundred jobs.
