Before they were handed over to England, the Seven Islands of Bombay were 16th century Portuguese territories located just beyond India's west coast. When the Governor of Bombay relocated his official residence to the island of Parel in the 1770s, he brought a slew of industry with him. The development that followed polluted much of the island, until years of land reclamation merged the archipelago into a single mass. Since then, Parel has evolved into one of Mumbai's poshest neighbourhoods, replete with luxury hotels, condominiums, premium office space, and upscale retail.
