I lived in Marseille for spells over three years. Wonderful place; extremely underrated. Venezia is incomparable (so too is Amalfi coast/Sorrento, Florence).
I am going to Porto this summer, so I am pumped.
Paris is extraordinary, but also quite unpleasant. I quite like Vienna, given it has pretty much all the upsides of Paris with comparatively fewer downsides. And the coffee/pastries are the best in the world.
The smaller European cities have a lot going for them. Wonderful charm/food, and less expensive/congested.
