225 W. Madison, formerly known as the Madison Street Jail constructed in 1985, is a unique design opportunity to resurrect a decommissioned jail facility that has been vacant for 10 years and re-purpose through adaptive re-use as a Class A office building. DLR Group's design reconnects the building to the urban context and in the process enhances the urban street and pedestrian environment. Vacated initially due to overcrowding and infrastructure failure, Maricopa County, the facility owner, considered renovating the building for detention use, which was not feasible, or demolishing the 30-year-old structure at a cost of almost $10 million of taxpayer money. Ultimately, the decision was to use highest form of true sustainability by re-purposing the existing facility. The economic driver was the benefit of consolidating leased office space into this county owned facility adjacent to the Maricopa County Courts Complex.
