He is definitely inspired by Wright's Mile High building, but it falls short literally and figuratively in a few ways. Obviously, 1km is shorter than 1 mile, but that is nit picking. Wright's elevators would have been "atomic powered" and been 5 stories each, something that has not been invented even yet, 60 years on.
But the one thing that Smith might have been able to incorporate of Wright's is the cantilevered structural system, and his failure to do this has always bothered me about this project. The tripod system he does use is an important one for megatall buildings, but if you're going to channel Wright then do it.
