About the innovation

Corrosion resistant composite material aims to address plastic waste management, and it can be used effectively to stop sea erosion. The composite is made by mixing the granulated LDPE waste plastic with GGBFS in the proportion of 60:40 and extruded. "The end product is 24 per cent stronger than concrete, 12 times cheaper than it and eight times lighter," says Swasthik.

When will our kids get exposed to mariculture? We also need research on seaweed foods. {sea vegetables,2,3}. It is sad that a few startups supposed to be from Dakshina Kannada are not having actual research facility in Dakshina Kannada. I wonder how many startups are like that in other regions (non parched city regions) of Karnataka! Is Karnataka government trying to create false impression that it has created startup ecosystem in other parts of Karnataka?

NITK Surathkal, five IITs get Rs 2K-cr interest-free loan for research
NIT-K among six institutes to get over Rs. 2,000 cr. interest-free loan
Quote:

The other institutes are the IITs of Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kharagpur, and Kanpur

The National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, is among six institutions in the country to which the Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) approved Rs. 2,066.73 crore interest free loan on Wednesday.

The funding would be for research and related infrastructure in addition to grants being given to these institutions. The approval was given in the second meeting of the HEFA Board on November 29. The other five institutes are the Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) of Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kharagpur and Kanpur.

“...The HEFA Board in its second meeting today approved projects for Rs. 2,066.73 crore for six institutions...,” a release from the Press Information Bureau said. “...These funds would be used to improve the research infrastructure in these institutions to further improve their standing at the global level...As per the scheme, HEFA would mobilise Rs. 20,000 crore through market borrowing and would release the same to the government institution as interest- free loans...,” it added.

The HEFA is a novel method of funding premier institutions through ‘securitising the future flows’. Each institution agrees to escrow a specific amount from their internally earned resources (not government grants) to HEFA. This forms a basis for a credit line which can be used by the institution for creating the required capital and research assets. The principal portion is repaid from the escrowed amount and the interest is met by the government. For the institution, this is an interest-free amount and gives facility to the institution to build the required research infrastructure of world class.

The HEFA has registered as a Section – 8 Company under the Companies Act on May 31, 2017. Canara Bank has been identified as the partner for setting up the Company. Government has released Rs. 250 crore equity and the Canara Bank has given Rs. 50 crore equity in the HEFA. RBI has granted a license under the RBI Act for HEFA to operate as NBFC on November 21, 2017, and to leverage the equity to mobilise money from market as per the requirements of the institutions.

Team Ecologic Habitats to complete elegant ‘Transit One’ Mall by next year
Quote:
The journey that Team Ecologic Habitats started does not just stop at handing over a beautiful finished product. The challenge lies in ensuring successful operations and management of the property. For this purpose as an optional additional service, the team has decided to provide mall management services to its esteemed customers and clients.

These services include lease management, facility management, business development consultancy, re-sale consultancy, finance management, mall marketing and promotions, market research- Tenancy mix, mall positioning, zoning etc.

Mall management has been identified as a critical factor for the success of malls and the retail industry across the world. The Team Ecologic Habitats anticipates that the success of Indian malls will not only be achieved by housing the biggest and the best mix of retailers, but also by setting up new standards and procedures in mall management that will provide a platform to differentiate its products and services from competitors. The vision of creating a unique niche in the market by providing innovative and inspirational products consistently is what Ecologic Habitats has kept going.
So, we are going to have Mall Analytics (Shopping Mall Analytics or Retail Analytics or WiFi Analytics) services at Mangaluru. One more mall (KSRTC, Bendorewell) is taken over by Congnizant. Hope some IT company working in 'commercial analytics' area prefer ‘Transit One’ Mall for running their operations. Wish as a offshoot we will have 'School of Commerce & Analytics' (e-commerce) itself.

Cut crude, LPG imports; use methanol says NITI Aayog prez
'Methyl cannisters to replace LPG in rural areas'
National Conference on IC Engines & Combustion at NIT-K
NITI Aayog plans to use methanol as alternative fuel: Former DRDO chief

Are they working on biogas run IC engines? What I am interested to know is whether same pipeline network which will be built for supplying natural gas can be used for supplying seagas or seaweed biogas to various consumers like industries, homes, commercial buildings (hotels/restaurants etc) and vehicles? {1,2,3,4,5}. I don't think anything drastic will happen if natural gas and biogas are fed through same pipeline networks. Seaweed cultivation definitely will save foreign exchange on petrol & gas if can be produced economically and can generate more jobs (though can be robotized for better productivity in future, By 2020, Artificial Intelligence will create more jobs than it eliminates: Gartner).

What Mangaluru needs is CSMCRI or IIPE or Marine Biotech Institute to carry out research on seaweed biogas and then Marine Biotech Park & Incubation Centre.

If biogas suppliers (say MGSCOM like MESCOM where G=Gas) have gas pipeline network, underground storage facilities, Bio-CNG stations {1,2,3,4,5,6} then I think many small/medium/large sized seagas, organic waste or other biogas producers can feed biogas to this network. (In case natural gas and biogas are already mixed then we can call it CG station itself). Sweden is the largest user of biomethane for vehicles. Here are a few study report on biogas natural gas blending - {1,2,3}. Probably some of industries need pure natural gas.

The setting up of one Innovation Centre each, in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, has been approved under the NITI Aayog Atal Innovation Mission, said Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The orders to begin the set up would soon be passed by the Centre she added.

She was speaking at the Mallikatte complex in Mangaluru on Friday after inaugurating the incubation centre there.

The Defence Minister said that the incubation centres would be set up in Mangaluru's NITK and Nitte deemed universities.

"Tinkering labs have been sanctioned for 55 schools in three coastal districts of Karnataka already. We intend to set up innovation centres in two colleges in each district," Nirmala said.

She informed that the objective of tinkering labs in schools was to nurture innovation among students from an early age.

"At the college level they get a stage to express their inventiveness. Thereafter, those who hold promise will get opportunities and infrastructure to work at the innovation centre," she added.

Besides, incubation centres will assist start-ups with finance and infrastructure she added.
