Hudson Alpha to add mile long greenway on it's campus both sides lined

Very impressive vision and design. This campus is located in Cummings Research Park.

Now, thanks to a commitment from Lonnie McMillian, president of the Alpha Foundation and a longtime Huntsville business leader, that attention is going out the window - literally.

McMillian, who is also co-chairman of the HudsonAlpha Institute board of directors, has donated $1.6 million toward developing "the grove" - an area of green space that runs the entire length of the nearly mile-long biotech campus.

"The grove has been thoughtfully designed to complement HudsonAlpha's collaborative model," McMillian said. "The institute incorporates the spirit of sky, earth, wood and fire.

"Now, we're taking that outdoors."

The campus' primary pedestrian pathway runs the length of the grove, between two parallel rows of buildings. There also will be areas for people to meet.

"Just as there are conference rooms on every floor of HudsonAlpha and there is the Atrium Cafe, where everybody meets, the grove will have that same sense of collaboration and sharing," McClain said.

As an example, McMillian said the maximum distance between buildings should be no more than 150 feet from one side of the grove to the other.

"At those distances, individuals can recognize a colleague who might enter the grove from the opposite side and then engage in conversation," he said.
