Mumbai property rises above slums

By Joe Leahy and James Fontanella-Khan in Mumbai
October 3 2010

Quote:
Mumbai property developer Abhisheck Lodha is flanked by architects and engineers flown in from New York as he expounds on his plan to build the world’s tallest residential tower.

He hopes the 450-metre, 117-storey building planned for Mumbai’s midtown area – to be known as World One will help to propel India’s financial capital to the top ranks of the world’s ultra-high-rise cities, alongside New York, Hong Kong or Shanghai.

“Be it the Opera House in Sydney or the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, every city gets associated with an architectural landmark and our feeling was that Mumbai for long has been devoid [of such a structure],” says Mr Lodha.

World One is the most ambitious development in a new wave of super-tall apartment towers springing up around Mumbai. These gated developments, a mark of India’s rising economic clout, are not only changing the city’s skyline but also its social fabric.

“Office buildings are our factories – whether for tech, creative or traditional industries we must continue to grow our modern factories to create new jobs,” said United States Senator Chuck Schumer.
