I've run into way too many American travelers, who first head to Europe for their foreign travel, then after that, they may head to Asia, and South America seems to the last on their lists.
I believe one of the reasons for that is Americans are more catered to in Asia/Europe, more bilingual people, more people speaking English, and in South America you're not catered to like that.
