Memorial Hermann Health System — Houston's largest health care system — will soon begin a $650 million expansion and renovation of its Texas Medical Center campus.

Construction on the Memorial Hermann-TMC Master Plan project is scheduled to begin this summer and conclude in 2018. Houston-based WHR Architects Inc. is the architect of record for the project.

The Memorial Hermann-TMC campus currently spans more than 2.5 million square feet, and the expansion includes:

An additional 1.34 million square feet;
additional 160 beds (plus 71 replacement beds);
24 new operating rooms;
16 additional emergency room bays;
750 new parking spaces; and
a 333-seat café.

The highlight of the master plan will be a new patient care building and an additional building that will include parking and infrastructure capabilities. Also, the master plan accounts for future growth with the construction of six shelled floors and six shelled operating rooms, with the potential of adding 264 beds.

“We recognize that our community will continue to grow and so will their health needs, so we’re designing the building with a forward-looking perspective to meet those needs,” Dan Wolterman, president and CEO of Memorial Hermann Health System, said in a statement.

The launch of the master plan project comes on the heels of much growth for the hospital system. Last June, the system’s board approved $50 million to address short-term capacity projects at the Texas Medical Center campus.
