On the other hand, I have seen some incredibly compact stations in Paris, Berlin and Vienna that I doubt would ever be allowed in the US. As in one or two pumps next to a small curb lane that can hold only the cars getting fuel. No wasted space at all but the pumps were close enough to the road that a traffic accident could be devastating.

I saw one in Paris that was actually underneath a cantilevered portion of a building, something I can't imagine ever being allowed in the U.S. (and as much as I like density, I'm glad that wouldn't be allowed here).
