It's not something that would work around most of Manhattan, but it had to be done here. Besides the fact that it's built over the railyards, the main reason it had to be done is because Related is basically trying to recreate a slice of Midtown on the west side, where virtually not much existed. You may be able to get by with creating office towers and residential buildings, but the shops and stores and restaurants can't be recreated on the scale of what you have on the other side of the island, and along the major shopping avenues. They had to create it all at once, in one location. In that sense, it could be mistaken for a typical suburban mall. But in actuality, it will be that in appearance only.
