I thank God the Union Army did not raise Savannah during the "March to the Sea". It would have been horrible to see such great archtecture and charm be lost. It is to my understanding the Mayor of Savannah at that time met General Sherman, prior to his arrival into Savannah, and presented the "Key" to City in exchange that Savannah would not suffer the same fate as Atlanta and everything in between. General Sherman then presented Savannah as a Christmas gift to Abraham Lincoln. (Please feel free to correct me if my history is incorrect.)
