Kind of a broad question . . .
I prefer Midtown to work. The idea of getting on a Subway and trekking it Downtown after a 1 1/2 hr train ride into Grand Central is very unappetizing. Fortunately I'm able to walk to work from the train.
For leisure though, I prefer Downtown . . . it's an incredibly neat area to explore and stroll around. I particularly enjoy the river walk from the Financial Center to Battery Park.
