It’s been a pretty busy year on the London stadium front. There has also been a scattering of <10,000 venue development, but I will possible concentrate on that in a separate post, along with updates on the new Luton Stadium (17,500) and Southend FC Stadium, both of which lie just beyond the M25. I’ve been pretty busy most of this year, so must confess, that a lot of the detail for this post is down to the hard work of skyscrapercity.com forum member RMB2007.

Oval, 40,000
One of the most historic stadiums in the UK, Surrey County Cricket Club have unveiled their plans to increase capacity of the Oval Cricket Ground to 40,000. Work will commence in 2019 and undertaken in phases.

Twickenham Stoop, 25,000
Harlequins have announced that they have employed the services to Populous to expand their south-west London stadium the Twickenham Stoop (not too be confused with the nearby Twickenham Stadium) from the current capacity of 14,800 to 25,000. The Stoop has been home to Harlequins for 54 years, and has been operating at high capacity for many years now. Plans are at an early stage, with more details emerging in the New Year. Further details: http://www.quins.co.uk/news/harlequi...ickenham-stoop

To get an idea of how close the Stoop is the Twickenham (both are rugby stadiums), check out the last image of the next report on the East Stand redevelopment at Twickenham.

Crystal Palace, 34,000
Selhurst Park has been the home of Crystal Palace since 1924 and has experienced multiple expansions over the years. The club have now announced plans to redevelop and double the capacity of the current Main Stand. This will increase the stadium capacity from the current 26,000 to 34,000. The development will include amendments to the Whitehorse and Arthur Wait stands, a museum, non-matchday facilities and increased space for hospitality. Crystal Palace hope to secure planning permission next year with work starting at the end of the year.

New Loftus Road, 30,000
Having lost out on acquiring a site for a new stadium in Old Oak Common, QPR have announced that they are exploring redevelopment of the nearby Linford Christie athletics stadium. The stadium is owned by Thames Valley Harriers (athletics club), and QPR are keen on exploring a partnership to construct a 30,000+ capacity stadium as well as an adjacent athletics stadium and track. AFC Wimbledon, 11,000/20,000
Wimbledon AFC announced earlier this year that they have confirmed a contractor to take forward designs for the new home for the club. The initial design will be for a capacity of 11,000, but with an intention to increase to 20,000 in due course.

As mentioned previously, their performance on the pitch has improved, as has their attendance, and they now pull in an average crowd of over 4,000. Unfortunately, their present home of Kingsmeadow (located in the Royal Borough of Kingston) is at capacity and lacks many modern amenities of a club with ambitions to go further. The club is now looking at relocating to Plough Lane in Wimbledon which was the original home for the historic Wimbledon FC between 1912-1991, and which is currently a greyhound racing track.

Brentford Community Stadium, 17,250
Brentford have unveiled revised plans for their West London stadium. The original plan was for a capacity of 20,000, but to ensure that the club are on a more sustainable footing, the club has opted to reduce the capacity to 17,250.

Lord's Cricket Ground, 32,000
Lord’s is one of the oldest venues in constant use on the planet; a few years back it celebrated its 200th anniversary. The age and piecemeal upgrades over many decades has however created a mish-mash of stands that are inefficient and not suitable for the modern-era. Capacity is currently 28,000, but Middlesex County Cricket Club are looking to overhaul the venue, and increase capacity to 32,000. Part of the first phase included the construction of a new stand – the Warner Stand – adjacent to the Grade II listed pavilion.

New White Hart Lane, 61,559
Latest pictures from the end of November of Tottenham Hotspurs stadium under construction in North London. A few notes from the picture:
- The rigging that will form the perimeter of the roof is clearly visible; once complete this will be raised and supported by the perimeter superstructure which is nearing completion
- The final steelwork at the southern end of the stadium (where the old WHL used to reside) is now rising
- The Kop (the large single tiered stand) is now coming together

If you look carefully at the pictures, you can also see the large storage facility which will house the NFL pitch. The new WHL is to my knowledge unique in that it will have two pitches, thereby giving NFL players a pristine pitch to play on, as well as avoiding cutting up the primary football pitch. The second pitch will be hidden beneath the stadium and surrounding residential development.

In other news, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (owners of Wimbledon) approached the members of the Wimbledon Park Golf Club which is directly across the road from the Wimbledon venue. The AELTC offered each golf club member £50,000 to put them out of their current lease which expires in 26 years. Wimbledon currently covers 42 acres, but the golf club covers 73 acres, potentially resulting in a substantial expansion: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...r-grounds.html
