Sunnymel is holding public meetings in a northwestern New Brunswick village to discuss the environmental impact of a proposed $40 million chicken slaughtering facility.
Sunnymel, the partnership formed by Olymel and Groupe Westco, will release the environmental impact assessment it performed for the provincial government and take questions from the public.
The proposed facility will be located in the industrial park in the village of Clair and the public meetings are planned for Friday and Saturday.
Richard Vigneault, a communications official with Sunnymel, said the public meetings will allow people to see what impact the plant would have in the area.
The environmental assessment examined the impact on various issues, including wastewater treatment, truck traffic and air quality.
No government funding
Vigneault said if Sunnymel gets the go-ahead, the plant will be built without government funding and it will also mean close to 250 jobs for people in Clair and the areas surrounding the village.
Vigneault said Clair is the perfect location for the facility.
"Because it's in the region near the farms where the poultry comes from and the fact that the village of Clair, with its industrial zone, was the best with water facility, lots of manpower too, where we can find people for work," he said.
The proposed facility would process 450,000 birds per week.
The proposal comes after a long-standing feud in the region's chicken processing industry.
Groupe Westco had announced it was joining forces with Quebec-based Olymel to build a new slaughterhouse in northern New Brunswick. In December 2007, Westco said that it wanted to start moving some chickens to a Quebec-based processing plant, while building a new facility in Clair.
That announcement caused the New Brunswick government to bring in a law giving the Department of Agriculture the power to decide where New Brunswick-grown chickens were processed.
