Land Transportation: Roads, Logistics, Parking

Sagaramala Project for Commerce, Tourism: Preparation of plan for Kuloor - Tannirbhavi - Sulatan Batteri - Old Port Road

Would that mean there is no need for 'Hanging Bridge' at Sulatan Battery? I would like Kannur/Adyar Bridge across Netravati also under Sagaramala Project.

Finally, light at the end of Shiradi Ghat tunnel
Quote:
Its geologists reveal the rock strata along the route of the project is made of solid granite and will offer the required stability for the tunnel.

Representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which is funding the project, have inspected the site on a couple of occasions and seem satisfied with it, according to sources. Also, the Railways will have to cooperate in building the tunnel, which is unlikely disturb the flora and fauna as feared, going by a geotechnical team member.
Wonder whether they are including railway tunnel.

Govt to develop economic corridors, logistics parks
Quote:
The economic corridors include Mumbai-Cochin-Kanyakumari, Bangalore-Mangalore, Hyderabad-Panji and Sambalpur-Ranchi to name a few.
Shiradighat tunnel may be a part of this project! And 'Smart Multimode Logistics Hub' may come up in Maravoor (Nagarjuna/JESCO site)!

A fund of Rs 3,000 crore would be spent on developing the Goa-Mangalore highway

Mangalore requires alternate roads

Summa: Suggesting following alternative roads, namely, Netravati Bridge - Kannur road (eastern part of Mangala Corniche Road), Tokkottu - Melkar Road, Netravati Bridge - Kuloor Road (western part of Mangala Corniche Road), Vamanjoor - Kullor Road (may be Vamanjoor - Bondel Road or Mangala Corniche itself).

Four-laning works of Hassan-BC Road 115 km NH to be completed by 2.5 years: Minister
Hassan-BC Road fourlaning works to start in March, 2

Summa: Isolux Corsán and L&T are contractors who are executing the project. Former Minister Kota Srinivas Poojari has suggested to decrease number of turns at Gundya and save trees by using government land on Hassan-Sakleshpur section. Shiradighat section cancelled works is waiting in court and this section will be of width 8.5 meters only even after fourlaning.

Ultimately Tunnel road can only save forest land.

‘Lack of land a hurdle to set up logistics park’
Mangalore requires well equipped Logistics Park

Why truck drivers illegally parking at multiple places can not be comfortable with multiple terminals? Whether Truck Terminal can come up along with 'Smart Multimode Logistics Hub' at Maravoor? Which is suitable place for 'School of Logistics'?

‘Mangaluru will have logistics park’
Quote:
Besides providing parking facilities to goods vehicles, the park will have other facilities, including warehousing, packaging, value addition and many more.

Mr. Mallikarjun, Joint Commissioner of Transport, said that he wanted to improve transport facilities in Mangaluru when he was the Regional Transport Officer here in 2011-13. However, he had very limited powers. Now being in-charge of the company, he can do something for the city which has huge potential for growth, the officer said.
In case of Maravoor Multimode Logistics Hub, apart from being near to seaport and airport goods can be easily moved in waterways by providing a water canal link to Gurupura river. But hinterland roads connectivity to MSEZ road corridor should be further strengthened and goods movement has to take place without entering main city. Rail track extension to Logistics Hub is not difficult as track exist already adjacent to this area.

Newly-laid Kadri Temple concrete road may not be dug up in future
Roads in Mangaluru North set to get new look

2.5 km road on Mangaluru-Athradi State Highway 67 connecting Mangaluru International Airport will be developed at a cost of Rs 50 crore

The parched cities get Rs. 1500 crores and Rs 100 crores and water rich Udupi-Mangaluru gets just Rs 50 crores. This is just another plan to steal away people from coastal region. We can definitely say that the state government had planned for K'taka's GSDP growth rate falls to 6.9%, below national average.

Ring Roads Construction, 2

Summa: Rs. 8 crores released for 6.5 km Netravatibridge-Kannur new road along river bank. Rs. 10 crores is sanctioned for Kannur-Kulashekar new road. Old port-Sultan Battery-Bengre-NMPT road is proposed under Sagarmala project. There will not be Sultan Battery-Bengre Suspension Bridge if this project is executed.

Hope they will also include Kannur or Adyar bridge across Netravati under Sagarmala as posted earlier.

Wonder which roads will be developed under 'Startup District' scheme. Mostly Ministry of Commerce and Industry itself decides secretly. But as it has finalized startup facility at NITK and NMAMIT we can guess that they may give stress on Surathkal-Airport and Airport-SH67-Nitte-Karkala road. If the centre allocates money for that part of SH67 then we have Marakada-Belman stretch fully developed as already Rs. 50 crores is allocated for 2.5 km stretch development in the state budget. Then we are left with Belman-Athrady stretch to complete airport connectivity to Manipal.

Over 3,000 trees being felled to widen NH 75

Tender for tunnel road
Quote:
PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa has said the tender process for implementing the proposed tunnel road project at Shiradi Ghat section will be taken up in January 2018.

In his written reply to Kota Srinivas Poojary (BJP) in the Council, he said the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will take up the tendering process. The project consultant, Geo Consultants, has been directed to submit a final feasibility study report, he added.
Shiradi Tunnel will be 7.5 meters high and 14 meters wide

Whether 14 meters wide tunnel means fourlane road? Is there provision to accommodate one more fourlane tunnel to make it totally eightlane road in future? Could it be just removing road divider to create oneway fourlane at that time?

Survey for Shiradi-Charmadi ghat alternative road

Summa: The state government is preparing DPR (Detailed Project Report) for Mudigere-Byrapura-Nayihalla-Perike road connecting to Shishila. This part of forest has less number of trees.

This road connect Shishila to NH-75 or SH-37?

Rs. 86 crores proposal for underpass at Nanthoor

Summa: Proposal is sent to centre. Also Rs. 8 crores and Rs. 3 crores District Court connecting roads project is under execution. Out of Rs. 50 crores airport road stretch, Rs. 16 crores will be used for constructing bridge across Gurupura river.

The Gurupura bridge is of around 200 meters length. So, the government is spending Rs. 34 crores for remaining 2.3 kilometers of airport road. Mostly this involves land acquisition cost also.

Ring Roads are the solution for traffic woes, 2

Note that if we are developing banks of Netravati & Phalguni rivers as per new MCRZ (Marine and Coastal Regulation Zone, 2) then this road on river bank may not act as bypass as it passes through MCRZ were commercial activities are allowed. No road in which commercial & tourism activities are allowed can be a bypass. And also, if you opt for BRTS (either Boat Rapid Transit System or Bus Rapid Transit System), it also goes against spirit of bypass as it is designed for Transit Oriented Development within city if new MCRZ rules allow it.

I can consider KotekarBeeri-B.C.Road-Kateel-Mulky road as a bypass if it is kept free from local traffic of city as much as possible. (As Thokkottu-Mudipu stretch is busy with local traffic it can not be bypass). In case of Mangala Corniche only Kannur-Gurupura stretch may be free of local traffic initially for a longer time than other stretches of it. Anyway till commercial or tourism activities start any new road can be used as a bypass.

The real bypass will be created when Sagarmala Expressway bypasses all commercial areas of every city on coast.

Widening of NH 75 between Hassan, BC Road set to begin
Quote:
The road work between Hassan and Maranahalli is being taken up by Isolux Corsan Company, while the stretch between Addahole and BC Road is awarded to L&T. It will take no less than two years to complete the work. The widening would add seven to eight metres to the existing road. The projected cost for upgrading the highway between Hassan and Maranahalli is said to be Rs 400 crore.
4 national highway projects in state progressing smoothly, 2 delayed
Quote:
The National Highways Authority of India is implementing all the six projects under build-operate-transfer mode in different parts of the state, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Mansukh L Mandaviya, informed Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Replying to a question by K C Ramamurthy (Congress), the minister said 92% of the four-laning works of the Suratkal-Kundapur section of NH-17 is completed and the remaining work will be completed by the end of June.

Around 70% of the four-laning work of a section of NH-66 from the Goa-Karnataka border to Kundapur is completed and the remaining work is targeted for completion by August.
Panvel to Mangaluru will be a four-lane concrete road
Quote:
There is another package on the Mangaluru road. The entire road from Panvel to Mangaluru will be a four-lane concrete road and the route which takes a duration of 10-12 hours should then take 5 and a half hours to 6 hours," the union minister said.
Why not the government make it six lane itself? At least make already constructed fourlane stretches sixlane concrete road for next repair.

Karnataka govt approves last mile four-lane connectivity to Mangaluru Airport
Quote:
The project funding also includes Rs 16 crore set aside for an additional road bridge across the Phalguni. This is essential to avoid the bottleneck posed by the existing two-lane bridge, Ivan said. In addition, efforts are on to seek permission from the Southern Railway to widen the existing rail under bridge, a little distance ahead from the road bridge, noted Ivan.

No u-turns, no side entry: 20,000 km of highways will go high-speed soon
Quote:
NEW DELHI: In the next four to five years, at least 20,000 km of major national highways will get rid of frequent cuts on the medians and will be barricaded to prevent stray animals coming on to the main highways. The main carriageways will be designated for the fast moving and heavy vehicles to ensure these ply seamlessly and at high speed.

This project, which also includes expanding the identified stretches to at least four lanes throughout the corridors under Phase-I of ambitious Bharatmala scheme, will cost around Rs 3.85 lakh crore.
Quote:
Considering the need to make existing highways more efficient rather than building more expensive greenfield roads, the road transport and highways ministry under Nitin Gadkari has sent the proposal to upgrade the identified stretches as "access controlled" ones, a concept which has been adopted by most of the developed countries. Access controlled roads have limited and designated entry and exit points instead of the present practice of every office or establishment joining the main highway. Segregated service roads are used for coming on to the main highway.

Some of these corridors that have been identified will be Mumbai-Kolkata and Mangalore-Bangalore, Ludhiana to Kandla and Porbandar to Silchar, primarily connecting the hubs of major economic activities, which includes ports, manufacturing hubs and trade centres. "All missing or stressed links will be developed uniformly to avoid congestion at any point on such corridors. The issue is whether by improving existing roads and creating dedicated unidirectional service road can we avoid investment of about Rs 12 lakh crore in building parallel expressways?" said a source.
Highspeed Highway between Bengaluru-Mangaluru

Not only NH-75 but also NH-66 included for highspeeding as it is part of Bharatmala project. If so, forget about making Mangala Corniche as bypass and just develop it for tourism and commercial activities. And Boat Rapid Transit System or Bus Rapid Transit System based TOD if MCRZ allows it. Disadvantage of Bus Rapid Transit System is it is going to have only one side to develop where as in Boat Rapid Transit System both sides of rivers can be developed as per TOD principles.

Getting back to highspeed highways, the highways should be easily scalable from fourlane to sixlane or eightlane in future. So service road should be at required distance from main road. Even connecting roads from service roads to main highway should be properly designed for scalability to save cost in future while expanding. As 45 meters width land is acquired for highway this can be easily done.

Even if highway separates intercity traffic from intracity/local traffic by allowing intracity traffic through service road (that is, highway itself is bypass), commercialization around highway should be minimum.

Within city limits, to disallow easy escape of criminals after committing crimes, security measures at highway entry points should be strenghtened.

Highspeed lane will allow fast movement of emergency vehicles.
